Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which profoundly affects how a person thinks, communicates and understands the world around them. Children and young people with autism may experience heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours. They often prefer to have a fixed routine and can find it difficult to cope with change. They may present a range of stress-reducing behaviours that can be unusual or challenging. Consequently, children with A.S.C. often cannot access mainstream groups or activity schemes to enjoy the same sort of social and educational experiences as other children. Furthermore, their families do not get any respite from their responsibilities as carers and many would reach breaking point without help.
